Newly diagnosed: How probable are subsequent attacks

Hey everyone! My awesome wife, who is 32 years old, recently received two significant pieces of news: she is pregnant with our second child; but...she has lost most of her eyesight in her left eye and has experienced other unusual symptoms. After being diagnosed with Neuromyelitis Optica (NMO) shortly after learning about the pregnancy, I've been exploring this informative website and community to learn more.

However, I'm still uncertain about the probability of preventing further attacks if proper treatment is administered.

Since she was promptly diagnosed and will begin treatment during her pregnancy, can we anticipate a reduced likelihood of future attacks?

Could you share your personal experiences, especially if subsequent attacks occurred despite receiving treatment?

Thank you! I appreciate your support and guidance.

  1. Yes

    1. After nearly four years and being put on soliris two months after I was diagnosed, and now taking ultomiris, I haven't had any subsequent attacks. I think it may depend upon the type of medication one is on so you could ask her neurologist.

There are a variety of different meds, some specifically for NMO such as soliris and ultomiris. Recent clinical studies have shown that uplinza is quite effective as well, so definitely ask the doctor. Your wife is in my prayers and congratulations to you both.
